Chennai has thousands of hard-working MSME owners. Manufacturers in Ambattur and Guindy. Traders in Parrys. Service businesses across OMR. Many of them are growing. Many of them are also tired.
Turnover goes up every year. But the owner still works 12 hours a day, still worries about cash, and still cannot say clearly how much the business really earns.
If that sounds familiar, this article is for you. I want to explain what business coaching actually works on, especially on the finance side, and how to know when it is the right time to seek help.
If you are already comparing coaches, read How to Choose the Right Business Coach in Chennai. Here, we focus on the problems coaching helps you solve.
Why growing turnover does not guarantee profit
Turnover is not profit. I say this often because many owners measure success only by sales.
When sales grow, costs grow too. More stock, more staff, more credit given to customers, more discounts to win orders. If margins are not watched, a business can double turnover and earn the same, or less.
I have written about this in detail in Turnover Increasing but Profit Decreasing.
Financial clarity is the starting point
Most owners I meet are not short of effort. They are short of clarity.
They know roughly how much they sold. They do not know which product, customer or branch actually makes money. They do not know their break-even point. They do not know how much cash they need next quarter.
Without clarity, every decision is a guess. From chaos to clarity is the first shift.
The seven essential business numbers
Every MSME owner should know these seven numbers every month:
- Sales — total revenue for the month
- Gross profit and gross margin — what is left after direct costs
- Overheads — rent, salaries and other fixed costs
- Net profit — what the business actually earned
- Cash in bank — the money you can actually use
- Debtors — money customers owe you, and how old it is
- Creditors and loans — what you owe suppliers and lenders
When you see these numbers together, patterns become visible. You stop reacting and start deciding. This is Data Before Decisions™.
Cash flow control
Profit tells you if the business is working. Cash flow tells you if the business can survive the next three months.
Coaching helps owners build a simple routine: a weekly cash review, a 13-week forecast and clear collection follow-up. Small habits like these prevent many sleepless nights.
For a practical list of common mistakes, read Profit but No Cash?.
Working capital discipline
Growth eats working capital. More orders mean more stock and more credit to customers before the cash comes back.
Without discipline, owners fund growth by delaying suppliers, using personal money or taking short-term loans at high cost. Coaching helps you set credit terms, inventory limits and payment cycles that your business can actually carry.
Personal finance first, then business finance
This one surprises many owners. But in my experience, business money problems often begin at home.
When personal and business money are mixed, nobody knows the true profit. The owner takes money whenever needed, and the business never builds reserves.
So I always start with a simple rule: pay yourself a fixed salary, keep separate accounts, and build personal savings and protection. When the owner's personal finances are stable, business decisions become calmer.

Making business growth decisions
Should you open a second branch? Hire a sales manager? Take a loan for new machinery? Give a bigger discount to a large customer?
These are big decisions. A coach does not make them for you. A good coach helps you ask the right questions, look at the right numbers and think through the risks before you commit.
When should you seek business coaching?
Coaching is not for everyone, and it is not a quick fix. It may be worth considering if:
- Your business is growing, but profit and cash are not keeping up
- You are the bottleneck, and the business cannot run without you
- You make big decisions without clear numbers
- You feel stuck at the same level for two or three years
- You are ready to change how you work, not just hope things improve
If you are not sure where your business stands, start with a diagnosis, not a commitment.
